Issues concerning the ＂Linguisticality＂ of Sino-Christian theology

Since Xiaofeng Liu's article ＂Sino-Christian theology in the context of modernity＂ (Logos and Pneuma, No. 2 [Spring, 1995]) was published, many serious comments have appeared. Responding to his commentators, Liu revised his agenda and published The Sino-Christian Theology and Philosophy of History (Hong Kong: ISCS, 2000), aiming at clarifying and elaborating his original intention. This article tried to review this dialogue process and to articulate several key issues: the linguisticality of the ＂Christ event, the ＂possibility＂ of Sino- Christian theology, the dichotomy between the ontic and onto- logical approaches, and the dimension of humanities of the Sino- Christian theology. Due comments are given in the review. On top of that, we shall find that whether Liu's agenda can work out or not does not only depend on the linguistic issues, but the context of modernity plays an indispensable role, as Liu him- self has emphasised.
