F. D. E. Schleiermacher is one of the most important and influencial theologian in modem period, and is often called the "Father of Modem Protestant Theology". However, he was misunderstood as only a cultural or academic theologian for long, rather than a church theologian. This article delineates his ecclecissology and its importance in his theological thought, especially from his most important works, e.g. On Religion, The Christian Faith and Brief Outline on the Study of Theology. It aims to point out that Schleiermacher was at the same time a cultural, academic and an authentic church theologian, as Brain Albert Gerrish used the term "Prince of the Church" to describe him. Based on this view, this paper also responses to some common misunderstandings and wrong critiques on Schleiermacher in nowadays Chinese theological circle.
