This article is a review of David Tracy's Dialogue with the Other. At the beginning, it gives a brief introduction on Tracy's thought. Then it focuses on three intrinsically related issues: Tracy's religious pluralism; the other and religious dialogue; public theology of pluralism and the publicness of theology. The context of religious pluralism requires religious dialogue and the crucial issue of religious dialogue is the question of the other. Tracy emphasizes from time to time that a genuine dialogue must treat the other to be a real, not a projected other. Tracy believes that this appeal to public realms is the way by which different religions live. As a famous public theologian, Tracy defends the publicness of theology. He argues that all authentic theology is public discourse. To sum up, Tracy is a dialogic theologian and consistantly participates in dialogues with many different others. For Tracy, dialogue is the only way to do theology. Tracy's thought is a response to the situation of America, which is similar to the contemporary situation of China. Therefore, we believe that Tracy's works is important to Chinese academy, especially to Sino-Christian theology.
