Based on John Hick's criticism on the traditional mono-religious approach to philosophy of religion and his vision for a multi-religious approach covering the philosophical issues of all religions, this article reviews critically the development of philosophy of religion in the West and China. In the Western academia, though the mainstream of philosophy of religion focuses rather exclusively on the Judeo-Christian tradition, there were also some scholars advocating and practicing a new model of comparative philosophy of religion since the 1950s. This alternative model, which takes world religions rather than the Judeo-Christian tradition alone as the subject matter for philosophical investigation, has been becoming increasingly more and more influential in recent years. Although John Hick was not the initiator of this move, his works embodied and made significant contributions to the formation and development of this model. In the Chinese academia, some scholars of philosophy of religion had put into practice a comparative model of or approach to philosophy of religion long before their Western counterparts proposed it. In China, this comparative approach, which is rather popular among contemporary Chinese scholars of philosophy of religion, is more viable and promising than the mono-religious approach in various ways. Firstly, it matches the rather pluralistic religious tradition of China. Secondly, it suits the largely secular yet pluralistic setting of the universities in contemporary China. Thirdly, in terms of academic background, the Chinese scholars in general are relatively better equipped for conducting comparative studies of religious philosophy. Lastly, in comparison with the mono-religious approach, this comparative approach to philosophy of religion may meet the educational needs of Chinese students in a more adequate way.
