The State-Faith and the Religious Faith in Contemporary China

摘要

並列摘要

The fact that we rarely use the term "state-faith" does not imply that the historical or social phenomenon it refers to does not exist in reality. In contemporary China, the state-faith as "the faith of the state", Marxism or Communism, does exist, but just in some limited sense and plays a role of expelling religious faith. The state-faith as "the faith of nationals" does not exist, as the faith of Chinese people is complicated and diversified, including religious faith and non-religious faith and their different and multiple forms and varieties. The state-faith as "the faith in the state" or belief in state does really exist even though the phrase is used rarely. This article offers an account of its historical origin, its various manifestations, its relationship to religious faiths and its threat to the welfare of the people, as it has certain quasi-religious or pseudo-religious nature.
