Buddhist-Christian Dialogue: A Christian Perspective on Bodhisattva's Compassion in Mahayana-sutralamkara

並列摘要

This article gives an evaluation on the Bodhisattva's Compassion in the Mahayana Buddhist literature Mahaydna-sutralamkara from a Christian perspective. Regardless of the commonality, Buddhism and Chrisitanity present some different discourses and understandings on the concept of compassion (karuna in Buddhism; σπλaγxνa and oiktipμoi in Christianity). Comparing with the Christian sciptures, Mahaydna-sutralamkara gives more philosophical analysis on Bodhisattva's karuna, which brings inspiration to the Christian tradition. Mahaydna-sutralamkara emphasizes the antagonism between worldly love and transcendentally compassionate love, while Christian scriptures present the familial, relational and affectional connotations in sacred love and compassion. Christianity tends to give an integrated attempt between the worldly and the transcendental. Through the Buddhist-Christian dialogue on this issue, both religions contribute and complement to the limited discourse within each respective tradition. And one gains a deeper and broader understanding of the concept of compassion from the Christian and Mahayana Buddhist perspectives.
