Most chapters of Tertullian's De Anima focused on the origin of the individual soul. His solution refers to the Stoic view of the semen of soul, which asserts that the individual soul takes its origin from Adam's soul through the activity of generation as well as the generation of the individual body. On the one hand, based on the Stoic notion of semen of soul, Tertullian syncretizes Hippocrates' and Aristotle's theories of generation, which indicates his succession to ancient Greek philosophy. On the other hand, Tertullian's theory of generation has found a special solution to the succession of original sin, meanwhile insisting on both notions of soul's corporality and simplicity, avoiding an acceptance of metempsychosis.
