摘要

把敦煌石窟按现在的状况完整保存下来，作为一个世界文明的遗产永久地留给子孙后代，唯一的办法就是通过高科技手段，将已经获得的和将要获得的图像、影像、文字、考古和保护等多种数据汇集起来，构建一个数字化、集成化的大规模石窟壁画资源库及敦煌研究数字资源保障体系，完整有序并且永久地储存这些资源，并为学界和大众使用，这就是“数字敦煌”。这是一个永久的、可靠的、呈动态、可更新和升级的系统，亦是一个资源管理和保障体系，以永久储存为主要目标，提供数据更新、数据自动检测和数据迁移等多种功能和一个强大的综合敦煌石窟图像和文献库。

If we want to permanently conserve Dunhuang Caves and pass the future generations as a world heritage, the only way is to integrate all the content materials that have been created and will be created into a digital repository and access platform, which can provide perpetual preservation, DAM, and access by the academia and the public in a systematical way. Such a system is Digital Dunhuang. This is not only one mural repository database, but a perpetual, reliable, robust platform. It is a data management and protection system, with a primary goal of providing permanent preservation of Digital Dunhuang content and related information, capable of data ingest, storage, upgrade, error detection and data migration. It will also have a powerful front - end for the global access to images and texts.
