Shing Wah Daily News and Its Influence on the Chinese Community in Canada

Published in Toronto between 1922 and 1990, Shing Wah Daily News (ShingWahYat Po) was the official organ of the overseas branch of the Kuomintang Party (KMT). Given its long span of publication and broad coverage of international, national and local news it can be credited as one of the most important Chinese language newspapers in Canada. The newspaper itself played a very important role in mobilizing Chinese immigrants during the Sino-Japanese war and thereafter. Since the US established a formal diplomatic relationship with China in 1979, the influence of the KMT government on overseas Chinese communities has been eclipsed by mainland China. The importance of the paper among the local Chinese population eventually faded out in the early 1990s. During its timespan, the Shing Wah Daily News served as the KMT's mouthpiece to disseminate its messages to the Chinese community around the metropolitan area of Toronto and beyond. Based on the author's research, this article elucidatesthe role played by the Shing Wah Yat Po in the Chinese community and its fatalistic ups and downs.
