Manuscript Materials for the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) at the Library of Congress

The Manuscript Division, the Asian Division, the Prints &. Photograph Division, and the Humanities & Social Sciences Division of the Library of Congress hold valuable manuscript materials related to the Sino-Japanese war (1937-1945). Using the Library of Congress Manuscript Division Finding Aid (http://www.loc.gov/rr/mss/f-aids/mssfa.html), researchers can find numerous wartime correspondences, diaries, memos, telegrams, speeches, articles, newspaper clippings, and other related original document in 20 plus manuscript collections. Important among them are "Nelson Trusler Johnson Papers, 1887-1954," "Owen Lattimore Papers, 1907-1997," " Harry Ervin Yanell Papers, 1875-1959," "Henry Luce Papers, 1898-1967," and "Clare Boothe Luce Papers, 1862-1988". These materials are very useful for scholars who conduct research on the Sino-Japanese War, the Sino-Japanese relations, the Sino-U.S. relations as well as the U.S.-Japanese relations during the tumultuous 1930s and 1940s. They are particularly crucial for researchers in the sense that they could help verify historical facts by comparison with other historical records. When doing research, Chinese scholars usually concentrate their attention more on Chinese or Japanese language sources than those in English. It is the author's sanguine expectation that Chinese scholars could make groundbreaking achievements in their respective academic fields by digging deep into the primary sources hosted at the Library of Congress so as to rediscover those forgotten or lesser known historical figures and events, which would certainly help them develop a more comprehensive understanding of this complex historical period under study.
