The Tun-huang manuscripts form one of the most important collections of Chinese documentary material. Individual catalogues of the holdings in the Paris and London libraries are already available, and these have been a centre of interest among scholars throughout the world. But the manuscripts preserved in the National Library in Taiwan remain relatively unknown to the world of scholarship, largely because no specialised catalogue of this material has hitherto been published. The author of the present article was able, in the course of a summer spent in Taiwan, to examine the whole set of manuscripts available there and to prepare the present analytical survey of them. At the same time he has endeavoured to correct a number of inaccuracies in the National Library catalogue. He hopes that the present survey will contribute usefully to the documentary information available to specialists in Tun-huang studies.
