This study investigated the use of discourse markers by university students in Taiwan in two contexts: English immersion and English as a foreign Language (EFL). Three focus groups, including two Native American speakers (NS), two Taiwanese students from International College (IC), an English immersion program, and two Taiwanese students from English as foreign language (EFL) department participated the present study. The frequencies of discourse markers by IC and EFL were compared to those of NS. The result indicated that the overall frequency of discourse markers usage of these three groups were different. As expected, the two IC students showed more frequently use of discourse markers in their utterances than those of EFL students. With regard to the variety of discourse markers use, no significant difference was found between these IC and EFL students.
