「女子無才便是德」之原初語境、後代詮釋及其歷史意義試探

A Study on Primary Expression, Interpretations, and Historical Significance of the Chinese Saying "Innocence is the Virtue for Women"

摘要


今天當我們說起「女子無才便是德」這句話時,很少有人考慮它的出處,而直截地視之為一種長久存在的傳統觀念(及由此觀念所產生的社會現象),於是「女子無才便是德」從一句晚明諺語變成一種歷史話語-我們用它來建構中國古代女性的邊緣化處境,或者用來諷刺衛道腐儒面對才女文化所產生的一種脅迫感。但是重新回顧這句話出現的時機以及清代學者的重新詮釋,則可發現該語的負面意涵實是五四新文化運動以來的詮釋語境所強化的結果。鑑此,本文試圖從該語發生的原初語境、清人的重新詮釋以及其在今日所產生的歷史意義進行討論。

When mentioning the proverb "Innocence is a virtue for women," people seldom know the saying's source and background; instead, they directly consider the saying as a long-existing traditional concept and connect it to the social phenomenon that arose because of it. The saying evolved into a historical motto after the late-Ming dynasty, and was connected with the marginalization of females in ancient times. Alternatively, it was seen as ridicule of the threat brought by the culture of talented women. However, after reviewing the origin of this saying and the interpretations by the Qing scholars, we can ascertain that the negative implications of the saying are actually the result of new interpretations since the May 4th New Culture Movement in 1919. In the light of the above, this study attempts to discuss the saying from the viewpoint of the primary expression, interpretations of Qing scholars, and historical significance.
