The main function of a park lock mechanism is to lock the gear box when the vehicle stops and the driver puts the gear box control into the P (Parking) mode, to make the vehicle no longer move. However, the park lock mechanism must meets the SAE J2208 regulation, which stipulates that the park lock mechanism should be functional when the vehicle speed is below 6 km/h , and should not lock the gear box when the speed is above 8-70 km/h for safety reason. Although a two-speed gearbox developed by ITRI's team has entered prototype testing stage, its park lock mechanism is still lacking in its original design. Therefore this article describes the completion of a vehicle park lock mechanism that complies with SAE J2208. Through the motion analysis of mechanism simulation software ADAMS and strength analysis with finite element software Abaqus, the park lock mechanism was implemented into the two-speed gearbox for electric vehicles developed by ITRI.
