Pharmacological treatment is an important approach in the management of heart failure. Treatments in patients with heart failure include diuretics, beta-blockers, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin II receptor blockers, angiotensin-neprilysin inhibitors, mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists, ivabradin, and digoxin. Medical management is provided to individual patients based on the disease classification and clinical status of heart failure, comorbidity, efficacy and adverse effects, lifestyle, and adherence. Optimized pharmacological treatment can relieve symptoms, prevent hospital admissions, and reduce mortality. This article will summarize the updated guidelines for management of heart failure, the formulas used by National Taiwan University Hospital, and the principle of medication therapy management.
