Enhancing New Surgical Nurses' Recognition of Surgical Procedures and Protective Measures Against COVID-19

Background: Due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak, the response mechanism of our country was activated immediately. However, operating room nurses are not proficient in COVID-19 procedures and protective measures, which may lead to panic staff, unsatisfactory operational procedures, and complaints from team members. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to increase surgical nurses' cognitive ability when it comes to "COVID-19 Surgical Procedures and Protective Measures." Methods: This study included in-person training courses on wearing protective equipment, online teaching videos, an epidemic prevention handbook, the announcement of operating room work area divisions, and personnel movement diagrams. Results: After the interventions, the nurses' "New Coronary Pneumonia Surgical Procedures and Protective Measures" cognitive ability scores increased from 59.40 points to 94.17 points. The results reached the target of 89.10 points. Conclusions: The findings of this study can be used to enhance educational training and practical exercises. Furthermore, they can be used to effectively improve operating room nurses' cognitive ability in response to the COVID-19 epidemic. We believe that our results will lead to better surgical care.
