Fang Yi-Chih's Theory on Painting

並列摘要

Fang Yi-Chih (1611-1671) a thinker and a compiler of Encyclopedia, is well known for his fantastic style of landscape painting. His work 浮山集 on prose at his earlier time before he became a monk is a very rare book which can only be obtained as a photo-copy from the Institute of Philology & History, Academia Sinica. There are several colophons in 浮山集 which records his views on painting, his life of art during his exile at Kwantung & Kwangsi. He declared that he mastered some technical key-points in the achievement of his painting from his friends. These colophons, however, are undoubtedly quite valuable for the study of the history of Chinese painting. In this article, the author attempts to interpret and analyse Fang's theory of painting, and presents a vivid account of his life and his friends connected with the colophons.
