This article deals with the naming system of the P'ai Yao 排瑤 in Lien-nan, Kuang-tung 廣東連南. The author attempts to analyze the essential features related to clan, lineage, sublineage, personal trait, order of birth, sex and marital status in the naming system and their organizing principles, and to delineate the rules for naming a person with descendents as well as conferring posthumous titles on the deceased. The significance of the naming system is intensively discussed in terms of its social functions.
