《廣雅》釋詁疏證駢枝

Complementary Notes on Kuang-ya shih-ku shu-cheng

並列摘要

Wang Nien-sun's Kuang-ya shu-cheng 王念孫廣雅疏證 is a major work in classical philology. It explains the meanings of classical words from the standpoint of etymology, phonology and semasiology, with special stress laid on phonology. In the preface to this work, Wang put forward the idea that meaning is lodged in the sound. Thus homophones or near homophones are likely to have similar meanings. When this phonological principle is employed, many obscure meanings in classical writings become apparent. After the publication of Kuang-ya shu-cheng, Wang wrote a sequel to this work, namely Kuang-ya shu-cheng 廣雅疏證補正. Subsequently, Wang Shu-nan 王樹柟, Wang Shih-lien 王士濂, Yü Yüeh 俞樾, Huang K'an 黃侃, Chiang Li-hung 蔣禮鴻 and others compiled additional annotations to Kuang-ya shu-cheng. Nevertheless, many problems left behind by Wang remained unresolved. In this article, the author follows in the footsteps of his predecessors and tries to supplement Wang's work in the shih-ku 釋詁 section of Kuang-ya shu-cheng. It is hoped that his efforts may prove useful to future researchers who are engaged in the study of Wang's work.
