Types of Rhetorical Devices in Chinese Literary Criticism

There are few discussions on types of rhetorical device used in literary criticism. To those who pay attention, in Chinese literary criticism traditionally there are various types of rhetorical devices used. In this paper, I study Shih-sho Hsin -yü 世說新語 by Liu Yi-ch'ing 劉義慶 of (Liu) Sung Shih-p'in 詩品 by Chung Jung 鐘嶸 of Liang, Shlh-p'in 詩品 by Su-k'ung T'u 司空圖 of T'ang and gather from these authoritaive works four main types of rhetorical devices. I label them as: 1) straight forward comments, 2) slogan type, 3) parallel in form, 4) parallel in spirit. Under each type I give various examples to support such a categorization and to demonstrate its use. I hope that this will be of some help to future students.
