南華寺六祖慧能眞身考

A Study of the Genuine Body Statue of the Sixth Patriarch Hui Neng in the Nan Hua Temple

並列摘要

The Southern Branch of the Ch'an School 禪宗 of Buddhism was founded by the Sixth Patriarch Hui Nêng 六祖慧能 during the T'ang era (618-907). He succeeded in Sinicising what was a foreign religion into a Chinese one and thus exerted a great influence upon the history of religion as well as the history of philosophical thought. The Ch'an Buddhism initiated the burial of the whole body, breaking away from the practice of Indian Buddhists of burying the Sarira 舍利子 after Nirvana 涅槃 The bodies of those eminent monks were preserved as mummies. The author, on the evidence of what he saw and heard and the thorough examination of related documents, establishes that the Hui Neng Statue at the Nan Hua Temple 南華寺 in the Ch'ii Chiang County 曲江縣 of Guangdong was moulded by the monk carver Fang Pien 方辯 using the genuine body of Hui Neng by means of the Chia Chu 夾紵 method. It is a pioneering work not only in the history of Buddhism but also in the history of the art of carving. This article also introduces in detail the various Hui Nêng statues in Guangdong since Sung, and some attempt is made in making comparisons among them.
