Su Tung-p'o exercised great influence on fiction and drama. The influence is fourfold. (1) He is the first to rewrite the works of others. It is under his influence that rewriting became popular in fiction and drama. (2) In his set of poems "Yeh-fan Hsi-hu wu-chüeh", Su Tung-p'o repeated the last line of the first poem as the first line of the second poem, and the last line of the second poem as the first line of the third poem. This rhetorical practice is subsequently imitated by authors of fiction and drama. (3) In Su Tung-p'o's works shan ke which is a kind of folk song beloved by the people are to be found. Under his influence, shan ke, Wu ke and Wu-chou ke were used extensively in fiction and drama. (4) Su Tung-p'o, being fond of old tales, was also a lover of ghost stories. He must be counted as the forerunner of P'u Sung-ling's Liao-chai. This is a point even P'u Sung-ling himself accepted without reservation.
