晚清詩史中的林則徐

Lin Tse-hsü in the Late Ch'ing Poetry

並列摘要

Of almost 3,000 anthologies of late Ch'ing poetry the author has looked through, more than 150 contain poems on Lin Tse-hsü. This paper is a study of these poems, most of which have never been quoted before. A great number of these poems lauded Lin Tse-hsü for the aid he gave to the victims of natural disasters in the Kiangsu area, showing him to be a statesman who believed that the "people was the foundation of the state". A lot of poets eulogized Lin for the part he played in the banning of opium and his subsequent resistance to Britain. When Lin was dismissed from office and sent into exile, the whole nation was shocked and resentful. To make his protest Wang Ting even committed suicide. In those days, this formed the subject of many poems. With the worsening of the war situation, there were poems expressing the hope that Lin might be reinstated. When Lin was banished to Sinkiang, many people wrote poems to send him off. There were, then, poems praising his contribution in this remote part of the country in spite of his own sorry plight. Later, when he was reinstated, there were con gratulatory poems. Many poems indicated that Lin associated with many of the celebrities at court as well as commoners. He knew his subordinates well so that he was able to assign them duties commensurate with their abilities. After Lin died, there were a great many elegiac poems in praise of him. As foreign aggression became more serious in late Ch'ing, people remembered the more this great patriot. The people eulogized and cherished the memory of Lin Tse-hsü, because in modern China he was the first national hero, the first statesman who regarded people as the foundation of the state, the first man who opened his eyes to look at the outside world. "The revered Mr Lin was the outstanding figure in the modern period." This appraisal was not only made by the people in the age of Lin, but also made by public opinion ever since.
