The term "Wu Style" 吳體 was first used by Tu Fu in his poem "Sorrow". There are several ways in which the term is taken which, in the author's opinion, are not altogether satisfactory. This essay puts forward a new suggestion: Wu Style can be taken to refer to the Qi Liang Style R poems in lines of seven syllables, from the point of view of tone patterns. This essay draws attention to the fact that in the Tang period poems of Qi Liang Style were thought to be not regular in tone pattern, that-some poets of the Tang period wrote verses in seven syllable lines following the tone patterns of Qi Liang Style, and that the terms Wu 吳 Jiang Zuo 江左 and Qi Liang are, therefore, the same in meaning.
