This paper aims at an in-depth analysis the Chinese scholarship on the Taiping jing since 1935. By so doing, the author attempts to summarize the achievement and problematic of their study on this Daoist classic. This paper will first outline the three stages of development in the Chinese study of the Taiping jing. Secondly, it will analyse three major areas of discussion among Chinese scholars about the contents, themes, and transmission of the book, namely, (1) the formation and transmission of the book; (2) the socio-political thought contained in the book and the relationship of the existing three different literary genres; (3) the religious value system of the book, especially the idea of "inheritance of sins" (承負) Finally, by detailing the history of the study of the Taiping jing by Chinese scholars, this paper further lays out some of the unexplored areas for the future study of the book.
