A Comparative Study of Gao You's Commentaries on the Huainan Zi, the Lushi Chunqiu and the Zhanguo Ce

Gao You 高誘 of the Eastern Han東漢 was the author of commentaries on the Huainan zi 淮南子, the Lüshi chunqiu 呂氏春秋and the Zhanguo ce戰國策 . As he tended to couch similar comments as well as glosses in similar wording, we can collate them to arrive at more reliable readings. Extant editions of the Huainan zi, including those published in the Song 宋, are not free from corruption. Gao You's commentary is no exception. This article attempts to compare Gao You's commentary on the Huainan zi and that on the Lüshi chungiu and the Zhanguo ce where there are duplications. It is hoped that this will be helpful to students of Han commentaries to early works.
