Huang Zunxian's poems, usually known as Renjinglu shi, are well known for their political savour. They reveal in detail his political activities and his network in the officialdom. By writing poems to his friends in the political circles, Huang gave full play to his poetical talent in the building of the network by which he finally fell in the throne's good graces and was given the opportunity to materialize his political ideal. Although the coup in 1898 ruined all his efforts and threw him back to his hometown as a commoner, his success in building an effective social network as shown in his poems proved that he was a poetical and political genius. This article aims at analyzing how Huang established the network to benefit his political career with his poetical talent. It also demonstrates that this network can be reconstructed through a close reading of his poems. By conclusion, this article points out the close relationship between poetry and politics in late imperial China.
