Considering the development of scientific schools or professional factions in history, the formation of a certain paradigm in the Kuhnian sense is often assumed. Regarding which, the habitual designation of regional schools or factional heritages in traditional Chinese medicine demands further delineation and investigation. Recent references to the existence and activities of the so-called "Huizhou medicine (or Xin'an medicine)" is one such particular instance. The present study is interested in taking the rare case of a practising pediatrician, Physician Xu Yuhe (1724-1805) from the district of She 歙 during the Qianlong era, to ascertain the usefulness and implication of such an assumption in the history of science and medicine. This essay begins with a biographic sketch and vocational training of Xu Yuhe. It then delves into the three main textual works by Xu, namely deliberations on "Fever," "Effective Treatments," and "Random Notes" respectively, to consider the scope, substance, and clinical expertise of this High Qing pediatrician with a long service record in the locality. Based on this micro-level observation on Xu's stance on feverish and other acute, contagious, and endemic indigenous diseases, as well as his field reports on fifty-seven cases, and his discussion on professional ethics and apprenticeship, a portrait of a practscing pediatrician from the Huizhou Prefecture becomes evident. It concludes though with an inclusive note on the validity of the so-called "Xin'an medicine" as a branded medical school or clinical faction, concerning which more specific cases such as that of Physician Xu's from the High Qing will be needed.
