Study on the Relationship Between Body Mass Index (BMI) and Serum Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) in Taiwanese with Non-Metabolic Obesity

摘要

This study examines the relationship between non-metabolic obesity and ALT among Taiwanese in light of that there has been little discussion about the association between non-metabolic obesity and ALT values in literature, nor is there any relevant report on Taiwanese subjects proving that the relationship between obesity and disease and mortality may vary with race and region. In this cross-sectional study, data from free health examinations offered by Chang-Hua Hospital in southern Changhua between May 2004 and June 2007 were analyzed. Seventy-one subjects from 1268 were enrolled in the study after metabolic obesity was excluded. The study data were analyzed with the independent t-test. Results of the study showed no significant statistical differences (p=NS) in age, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, and ALT among non-metabolic obese subjects in the slight obesity and moderate obesity groups. The ALT value of non-metabolic obese subjects did not increase as their BMI value increased. After obese subjects with a higher blood pressure, blood glucose, and blood lipid value, symbolic of metabolism syndrome were excluded, it was found that there was no relationship between the BMI and ALT values of Taiwanese with non-metabolic obesity.
