Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most common cancer in Taiwan. The paraneoplastic syndromes associated with hepatocellular carcinoma include hypercholesterolemia, hypoglycemia, hyper-calcemia, and erythrocytosis. The purpose of this study is to make comparisons of the clinical characteristics between non-diabetic hepatocellular carcinoma patients complicated with and those without hypoglycemia in Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital. This is a retrospective study by analyzing 30 non-diabetic patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and hypoglycemia between January 1990 to August 2007. The definition of the hypoglycemia in this study is equals or lowers than 54 mg/dl. Another 101 non- diabetic hepatocellar carcinoma patients without hypoglycemia were enrolled as control. The clinical characteristics were compared between these 2 groups yearly. The results showed that α-fetoprotein, total bilirubin and tumor size were significantly higher and plasma glucose and hemoglobin were lower in the group of hypoglycemia.
