Laozi as Confucius' Master-On the Contributions of Liu Yuan, His Family, and the Liumen Tradition to the Development of Sichuan Daoism

Liu Yuan was an outstanding Confucian scholar in Qing dynasty Sichuan, and he is also the founding patriarch of the Liumen 劉門 (Liu School) tradition, which formed an important part of Sichuan's civil society in late imperial and Republican times, contributing to the fields of education, culture, charity, and religion. A major characteristic of the Liumen tradition was its relationship and interaction with Daoism. Traditionally known as one of the "birthplaces" of Daoism, Sichuan is the location of numerous Daoist temples and sacred sites, many of which were once rebuilt or supported by the Liumen community. The present paper discusses Liumen's interaction with the two most important Daoist sanctuaries in the provincial capital Chengdu: Qingyang gong 青羊宮(Temple of the Grey Goat) and Erxian an 二仙菴 (Hermitage of the Two Immortals). In the early twentieth century, the anthology Chongkan Daozang jiyao 重刊道藏輯要 was published by the monastery Erxian an. Five stele inscriptions in the Chongkan Daozang jiyao, authored by Liu Yuan and one of his sons, and other written sources testify to the major role the Liumen tradition once played in the modern history of the two Daoist temples.
