摘要

「才」字筆畫簡單，但是本義、引申義、假借義卻極其複雜。已往學者因為不明「才」字的本義，因此對於它的詞義變化說得不夠精確，很多詞義的訓釋也說不清楚。現在我們知道「才」是由「弋（杙）」分化而來，因此引申有「才能」義、「材質」義、「特立」義、「初始」義、「在」義、「極」義、「分」義等。經過這樣的探討，對於類似《周易》「三才」的「才」這種精微奧妙的詞，只有了解古人如何思考訓解，我們也才能掌握得較為精確。

The stroke count of the character cai 才is simple and easy, but its original meaning, derived meanings, and loaning is extremely complicated. Because its original meaning has not been properly understood, scholars have been unable to accurately discuss its evolution and have missed the mark in defining its meaning in texts. Now that we know cai 才split off and evolved from yi 弋 (杙), we are in a better position to evaluate its derived meanings, and to reassess the abstruse phrase ＂san cai＂ 三才in the I Ching.
