Nest and Growth of Young of Formosan Blue Magpies

摘要

This study focused on the nest characteristics and the development of the young of the endemic Formosan Blue Magpies. During the breeding season of 1983 and 1984, 16 nests were located in Taipei, Miaoli, Taichung, and Pingtung Counties. Nests were usually positioned in the middle of the canopy, placed on several medium sized branches on diverse species of trees. The inner dimensions of the nests were relatively uniform. The clutch size of Formosan Blue Magpies was 5-6 eggs. Egg sized varied greatly between clutches. Young magpies needed 20 days to become fully feathered, and fledged around 30 days old at two thirds the adult size. Adults renested three times when earlier clutches were lost prior to fledging. Site tenacity, unequal growth, predation and maturation of this species were discussed.
