Seven subspecies of white-faced giant flying squirrel Petaurista alborufus have been recognized and are divided into 2 groups; 28 subspecies of red giant flying squirrels Petaurista petaurista have been identified and are separated into 3 groups on the basis of pelage coloration. Pelage color groups of P. alborufus occur in two distinct geographic zones, while thoe of P. petaurista occur in two overlapping regions.
