This paper deals with light microscopic studies on the mature mericarps of 17 taxa of Sida, with respect to their surface characters, size, shape, relative length with calyces etc. in relation to taxonomy. Mericarps are typically differentiated into a lower, one seeded indehiscent portion and an upper dehiscent portion which is often ornamented with a pair of awns. The upper and lower portions are set apart by a dorsal "shoulder". The lower cell is trigonal in cross section and is often laterally reticulate. The observations indicate that mericarp characters, are the best bet in the species level classification of this problematic genus.
