Introduction: Prevalence of hypertenstion in Vietnam has been increased steadily during the past two decades. Knowledge of the disease, recommended behaviors and compliance to treatment guidelines is influencial factors to treatment outcomes. Objective: To study knowledge about hypertension and analyze compliance to recommended health behaviors and drug therapy among hypertensive patients managed by a district hospital in Vietnam. Methods: Descriptive study design including extraction of patient records and direct interviews were performed with 263 primary idiopathic hypertension patients who were managed by the hospital for at least 12 months. Information collected includes personal characteristics, knowledge of hypertension, level of compliance to recommended behaviors (reduction of salt and lipid intakes, reduction of alcohol beverage, tobacco cessation or reduction, physical actiivties, blood pressure monitoring, regular check up) and drug therapy. Result: The results shows that only 8.6% of patients had good knowledge about diet, appropriate life styles, current drugs in use, signs need doctor's colsultation. Good compliance to recommended behaviors was only 19%. Conpliance rates for drug therapy for hypertension were low. Compliance is higher in men, in people with regular income from wages, in people with better awareness of hypertension. Conclusion: Compliance rates for recommended behavior and drug therapy amogn hypertensive patients are low. It is necessary to improve health literacy of patients, support appropriate solutions for people without stable income. At the same time, find out why women are less compliant in order to propose interventions based on identified causes.
