摘要

Introduction: Patient centered care (PCC) is widely practiced aiming to enhance the benefits of patient care programs. We wished to assess the impact of Health Literacy (HL) on the effectiveness of PCC programs. Methods: A systematic review was conducted adhering to PRISMA guidelines. We searched PubMed, Embase and Google Scholar using keywords "health literacy" OR "health competence" AND "patient centered care" OR "patient centered medicine" OR "person centered care". Only the publications in English language and primary research were included in the analysis. Results: We found only nine publications related to this field. Wolf et al, found that patients with limited HL to be more benefited by PCC approach in terms of self-reported and objectively assessed medication adherence. Wynia et al found that patients with limited HL, compared to those with adequate HL, are less communicative with health care organizations and suggested that health care organization to take necessary steps to fill the gap. Altin and Stock found that respondents with sufficient HL skills, compared to those with limited HL skills, to be 2.06 times as likely to be satisfied with care received by their GPs. When GP explained things in an easy to understand way patients knew important things about their medical history and were more satisfied with the care provided. Discussion: Limited data indicate that HL is a potential determinant of successful outcome of PCC programs. More studies are needed to confirm these findings.
