As Taiwan's population is aging rapidly, the role of caregivers of older adults has become increasingly important. Family members often have to assume the responsibility as the primary caregivers of older adults in families. Previous research has focused mainly on the burden and negative experiences of these caregivers. However, positive experiences can also be gained from caregiving. The present article presents an integrated view of both positive and negative caregiving experiences, covering the physical, mental, social, and economic aspects of those experiences. In addition, strategies for dealing with negative caregiving experiences are summarized and available resources for family caregivers of older adults are offered. Although the effectiveness of various interventions remains in need of evidence from quality empirical studies, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based stress reduction programs, and exercise have been reported to be promising strategies for improving the mental health of family caregivers of older adults. It is hoped that the present article can offer suggestions for further studies dedicating to developing effective interventions and policies for supporting caregivers of their older family members.
