Humanistic Buddhism Records of Transmission of the Lamp, Case Study of Master Mingshan
摘要
本文係《人間佛教傳燈錄．大陸編》十五個學案之一，該書包括《海外編》、《大陸編》、《港澳臺編》三部分，在繼承中華傳統史學體裁的同時，也吸取運用了歐美現代學術思想史研究理論與方法，對廣泛搜集得來不易之1949年至今，海峽兩岸及海外弘傳人間佛教思想的百位高僧大德生平思想事業資料作了深入梳理與研究，以使當代人間佛教群英流傳千古萬代。本文除依高僧傳慣例詳列茗山法師生平及成就之外，還梳理了其佛學思想的學脈、承傳衣缽的法脈及本人修行的法門淵源，通過閱讀其上百萬字的著述及深入研究，剖析了其思想特點，指出了其眾多弟子與法脈繼承者在華東地區的廣泛影響，精選並錄入其最有代表性的論述。依學案體史書連類並舉的原則，附帶論述了他親近的同道無相法師生平事業。

This article is one of fifteen cases in ＂Humanistic Buddhism Records of Transmission of the Lamp in Mainland China＂. Humanistic Buddhism Records of Transmission of the Lamp contains three parts, which are ＂Overseas＂, ＂Mainland China＂, and ＂Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan＂. The author not only continues traditional Chinese approaches to history, but also uses modern European and American theory and methods for academic historiography. Taking a broad range of difficult to find data from 1949 until the present, this is an in depth study of one hundred eminent monastics, including their lives, their propagation of Humanistic Buddhism between the China Straits and overseas, their thinking and activities, which will leave a lasting record of the leaders of modern Humanistic Buddhism and their transmission. This paper, apart from taking Ven. Mingshan's life and works as an exemplar of such eminent monastics, also analyzes the scholarly lineage of his Buddhist philosophy, the Dharma lineage of his robe and bowl, and the sources of his personal methods of spiritual cultivation. Having studied in depth his writings totally over one million Chinese characters, the special features of his Buddhist thought are analyzed. This shows the broad ranging influence that his disciples and Dharma heirs have had in the East of China. A selection of their most representative writings has been added to this study. As an historical case study, the life and works of his comrade, Master Wuxiang, have also been included in this paper.
