Faith, Intellect and Suffering

並列摘要

This paper explores the relationships between faith, intellect and suffering for Weil. Weil continued to love fellow human beings and to love God in the midst of personal tragedy. Suffering had strengthened her faith. But all the while her intellect questioned the perfect goodness of God in light of the suffering. In that sense, Weil was first and foremost a believer of reality before she was a believer of Christ. To her, all these experiences were real and valid-her confession of faith, her encounter with God, her intellectual skepticism, her fierce criticism of the church and of Christians, and her ability to love man and God in the throes of suffering. Finally, her refusing baptism must be seen as an act of integrity and even one of obedience to God's will as she strove to remain true to self, because she did not sense God's personal command for her receive baptism.
