The religious sensibilities of the controversial British romantic poet, Lord Byron, have attracted increasing interest in recent years. This paper examines six poems by Byron in light of his religious background and developing thought. Far from being the "merry iconoclast" he is often portrayed to be, we find Byron creating a new basis for "experience" as the interpreter of religion, and an inclusive approach to religious awareness as the ground of human life and moral coherence; themes which possess remarkable resonances with post-modern spiritualities.
