Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834), was a poet, literary critic and a theologian. Although he lived within an inherited Christian tradition, he had a unique perspective on the world and its progress. He believed that God created the World out of love, however, at the same time God also acted as a "Crazy Conductor" who "perfectly performed all the tragic notes". God may perform miracles to rescue human beings on each occasion but God can hardly protect human beings from repeatedly falling into the throes of destiny. This paradox led Coleridge to a position of suspicion regarding the human world created by God.
