The Figurists and the Acknowledgment of Similarities in Chinese and Western Cultures

並列摘要

Joachim Bouvet, Jean-Francois Foucquet, Joseph Henry- Marie de Prémare and Jean-Alexis de Gollet, the Jesuit missionaries during the Qing-Dynasty in China, were considered as Figurists because of their attitude toward traditional Chinese culture. They tried to find traces of historical records of Christianity and the Bible in the ancient books of China, in order to provide material for the acknowledgment of similarities between Christianity and traditional Chinese religions. This paper will undertake to examine these Figurists in their China-mission, especially their resolve to seek common ground and their method in their study of Chinese classics, from a perspective of modern philosophy and hermeneutics. Obviously, the Figurists had defects in their textual research, but their spirit and effort for the acknowledgment of similarities in Chinese and Western cultures can surely give us something new and significant for the contemporary dialogue between different religions and cultures.
