The History of colonial and postcolonial readings of the Bible can provide a powerfully instructive study of its suitable uses and abuses. There are many different voices in the Bible, and there are also different emphases which readers can put on it. The same texts, depending on how they are read, can bring either life or death to the same people. The Bible has been put in giving support to the appalling treatment which the conquistadores meted out to the small and weak nations, on the other hand, it can be used to bring comfort, strength, and liberation to people living under oppression. A critical and attentive reading of the Bible can inform and sharpen our moral sense and provide a moral and religious vision which can transform individuals and communities.
