Learning, Teaching, and Researching Biblical Studies: Today and Tomorrow

This paper is an examination of what we are doing with our students in the academic study of the Bible. It is a questioning of the rationales of the traditional teaching. The paper advocates a shift of focus in our educational theory and praxis from the teacher to the student and a shift from the teacher-centered learning to the student-centered learning, which is well supported by formidable theoretical frameworks, such as the constructivist theory of learning, the zone of proximal development and "critical pedagogy". The student-centered learning is to resolve to enable student" to acquire understanding and skills rather than knowledge. The traditional teacher now becomes a facilitator. With whose support, the learner will personally investigate, which is termed as inquiry-based learning. The routine instructional materials are moved outside the classroom. The students move to Internet resources, blogs, and written texts. And the classroom became the social space for learning. The introductory course or the survey should he canceled because of their superficiality and wide generalizations. In a student-centered curriculum, the designed outcome is to enable students to think like biblical scholars and consequently lead to the student as scholar.
