For twenty centuries, the Bible has been the preeminent book in Western culture. The idea of the Bible as literature begins with the Bible itself. We can look to the Bible itself to see the nature of a literary book. The concept dates from the Renaissance. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the religious view of the Bible gradually waned, and correspondingly the Bible was often regarded as a work of literature only. The Bible remains the most frequently referenced book in the 20^(th) century. The academic study of the Bible as literature begins at the start of that century. The movement was energized by professors of English and American literature who saw the potential in applying theories and methods they often adopted in their literature courses to the biblical studies.
