Why Did God Test Abraham-The Exegesis of Genesis 22:1-2 in Sefer ha-Zohar

"Akedah" is one of the most fascinating texts in the history of Jewish exegesis. In order to answer the classical question "why did God test Abraham?", Sefer ha-Zohar I:119b interprets Genesis 22:1-2 from the perspective of the main stream of medieval Jewish mysticism-Kabbalah. Combining the representative views in Talmud and the Midrash with the concepts in Sefer Yetzirah and Sefer ha-Bahir, Zohar comprehends Abraham as the symbol of the fourth Sefirah "Chesed" in the Kabbalistic system of Sefirot, a counterbalance to the fifth Sefirah "Din." According to this system, the real object of God's test is helping Abraham perfect his character with the power of Din. Inheriting the traditional midrashic method, Zohar vividly expounds the burgeoning Kabbalistic view of God.
