Application of Friction and Spiral Disinfection in PICC Maintenance

Objective: To compare the application of friction disinfection and spiral disinfection in PICC catheter maintenance. Methods: Ninety patients with PICC catheter were enrolled in this study. They were randomly divided into experimental group (43 cases) and control group (47 cases). In the experimental group, the skin around the puncture site was disinfected by frictional disinfection method, and spiral methods for the control groups. Sampling inspection was done before and after the disinfection. The number of bacterial culture colonies, catheter maintenance time, patients' and nurses' evaluation of operation before and after disinfection were compared between the two groups. Results: There was statistically significant difference between the two groups for bacterial colony count before the disinfection(P＜0.05), but no statistically significant difference after the disinfection. There was not statistically significant difference between the two groups for the Maintenance time (P＞0.05). The nurses' and patients' satisfaction for the procedure were higher in the experimental group compared with that in the control groups(P＜0.05). Conclusions: during the PICC Maintenance, Friction methods can reach the technical standards of disinfection (Bacterial colony count≤5 CFU/cm^2) and the antibacterial effect was also better during the 7 days after maintenance. The Satisfaction and acceptance from nurses and patients were higher than spiral methods.
