The materials in the new edition hymn in Taiwan is very diverse. It can be tracked back to Jewish, Greek, Latin heritage and also the liturgy and German chorale after reformation in 1517. The hymnal also includes many other cultures such as middle east, spiritual gospel music, Latin America, pacific island, Asia and indigenous music of Taiwan. This year is the 500th anniversary of the reformation. This article is first of a series that discusses improvisation and accompaniment of choral in polyphonic style which was popular during the Baroque period and afterwards. In the rest of the series, different accompaniment techniques and improvisation used in liturgical worship will continue to be discussed for church musicians.
