As contemporary comments are usually distinctive, comments on Tang dynasty poetry from its contemporaries are of matchless value to readers of later ages. From this standpoint, the thesis gives a close reading of comments on poetry of Meng Haoran by Wang Shiyuan, Yin Fan, and Pi Rixiu, all contemporaneous with Meng. Relating these comments with the poetic background of the high and late periods of the Tang dynasty, the author explains their connotation, thereby clarifying Meng's influence on his contemporaries; we learn the meaning of 'half in an elegant style, with absolutely no popular style,' and of 'poetry of Tang dynasty Emperor Xuanzong's age with the outstanding poetic style of Ji'an,' none of which has been investigated deeply, or discussed clearly and definitely before.
